Homes evacuated after fire involving gas cylinders breaks out

A number of residents in Torquay have had to evacuate their properties after a fire involving gas cylinders broke out.

Crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are battling a blaze at a commercial property on Barton Road.

Heavy traffic is building in the area as the road has been closed southbound following the incident.

In a statement on their official Twitter account, a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: ”Due to an incident involving cylinders at Barton Road Industrial Estate Torquay we are asking people close by to keep their windows closed.

”Road closures are in place at Hele Roundabout to the top of Woodland Road.

”We are working with the police evacuating some properties nearby.”

Traffic website Inrix reports: “Barton Road Southbound closed, slow traffic due to building fire from B3199 Hele Road to Old Woods Hill.

“Woodland is also closed in relation to the incident. Traffic is heavy on the A3022 Newton Road near Asda Supermakret avoiding the closures.”
