Three new coronavirus clusters recorded across Devon

There has been an increase of nine cases in the cluster area linked to the University of Exeter in the latest data, returning it to Devon’s largest Covid outbreak.

The Pennsylvania & University area of Exeter has recorded 42 coronavirus cases in the latest Government and Public Health England data concerning clusters of three or more cases.

Three new clusters take the number of areas in Devon with more than three infections to 116 areas.

New clusters are in Hartland Coast , Ilfracombe West and Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and East Dartmoor.

The areas with over 30 cases are Pennsylvania and University (Exeter), Brixham Town, Braunton, Paignton Central, Wellswood and Wonford and St Loye’s.

Those with over 20 cases are Higher Brixham, Ottery St Mary & West Hill, Shiphay & the Willows, Exmouth Littleham and Exmouth Town.

Areas not listed are classified as “data suppressed” in the Government data, meaning that those areas have between zero and two cases and the data isn’t published in order to protect the privacy of individuals involved.

Today’s update covers the week from November 6 to November 12, meaning positive tests reported on November 5 no longer appear in the statistics.

What is a coronavirus cluster?

The Government’s coronavirus cluster map splits the country into areas of roughly 7,500 people, based on the 2011 census, known as Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs).

The map highlights areas where three or more coronavirus cases have been reported for a week period, with the numbers coming off of the map a week after being confirmed positive.

Areas not highlighted do not necessarily have no coronavirus cases in them, as the data does not highlight or count areas with less than three cases in order to protect individuals privacy – meaning that if an area has one or two cases, it will display as 0 to 2 cases.
