Young Carers Awareness Day – Thursday 31st January 2019
Each year the Carers Trust organise a Young Carers Awareness Day to promote young carer related issues and the challenges they face due to their role as a carer.
Mental Health Theme for 2019
The theme for this year’s Young Carers Awareness Day is mental health. With 1 in 5 secondary school pupils now having an active caring role at home, and 1 in 4 people suffering with mental ill health at some point in their lives, mental health support for young carers has never been so important.
Tom Humphreys, Devon Young Carers Lead Practitioner, said:
“In the work we do to support young carers, we see how their responsibilities can impact on their lives on a daily basis. More and more, young carers are reporting to us how their caring role leaves them feeling stressed and isolated, which can have a huge impact on their mental well-being. Unfortunately young people also tell us that professionals often don’t understand and are just unaware of the challenges they face as carers, which often means the support they need for their mental health isn’t available.”
“As part of Young Carers Awareness Day our staff team and young carers will run a marathon to promote the positive impact that exercise can have on our mental health, while also raising public awareness on how to best support young people in their role as a carer.”
Devon Young Carers provided support to over 3,000 young carers last year, which included school visits, information and advice, trips, drop-ins and activities, one to one support and the opportunity to attend the annual young carers festival.

A young carer said “My favourite moment at the Young Carers Festival was conquering my insecurities around doing new things for example trying water sports. I also have really enjoyed making new friends and meeting new people.”
Parent of a young carer said “Our son had such a good time at the festival, he said it was the best time of his life. I have not heard him so chatty and excited in a very long time. It must have been just what he needed. You are all amazing”
Councillor James McInnes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for children’s services, said:
“Young carers play a pivotal role in the care of others, and yet the impact of that on their own lives is often overlooked. It can impact on their education, their private lives, their health and mental wellbeing. We are asking families in which a young person, under 18 years old, has a part in the provision of care to a family member, to contact Devon Young Carers. Support is available to them, and we want them to have the same opportunities to life as other young people.”
